"Great White Shark" now on display!
A great white shark exhibit has been terminated for its condition.
We started the display of "Great White Shark" the largest predatory on earth.
Great White Shark, male, 3.5 meters (11.5 ft) in total length, has been displayed in "the Sea of dangerous sharks" tank from January 5th, 2016.
Please note that exhibition may be canceled due to the shark's condition.
Although the difficulty in transporting and keeping living Great White Sharks in aquariums, we have succeed to display the shark in our aquarium. Great White Sharks distribute worldwide in all oceans except for the polar region. They grow up to 6 meters (20 ft) in total length. Starring in a movie "JAWS", Great White Sharks represent the dangerous shark ranked first in having the most recorded attack on humans according to the International Shark Attack File. There is only little keeping record and little is known about their biology. We expect to acquire more biological information on the species in captivity through keeping the shark.
≪Past precedent keeping record of Great White Shark in other aquariums≫
・Several-months record in Monterey Bay Aquarium, the United States
・4-days record (2002) in Shimane Aquarium AQUAS, Japan
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the sole aquarium displaying a living Great White Shark in the world at the present.
